MedCity extends our sincere solidarity to the researchers, scientists and front-line healthcare workers in the fight against COVID-19. To our close friends and colleagues in Japan and Korea, we wish you well and eagerly await the chance to re-engage. COVID-19 underscores what is intrinsic and essential in science, global engagement, because viruses do not recognise borders.

Scheduled plans for our Director of International and Cluster Development, Phil Jackson, to fly out to Japan and Korea this week have been put on hold amid quarantine threats across multiple borders, but our global engagement efforts continue and we’re looking forward to welcoming the Japan Bioindustry Association to London in May.

Global engagement

A critical role that MedCity was formed to fulfil was the promotion of excellence in science in London, the greater south east and the UK. Our institutions are global in the staff who work in them, our science base is global, and our partners are global. As a part of fulfilling this function we engage with research institutions, companies and universities from many countries.

This week MedCity was due to travel from London to Seoul for multiple meetings across Korea and Japan, building on long standing and highly productive relationships to promote excellence in UK life sciences and enable fruitful collaborations.

Sadly, faced with the potential of quarantines across one or more borders and mounting flight cancellations, we have regrettably had to postpone this visit. COVID-19 underscores what is intrinsic and essential in science – global engagement, viruses do not recognise borders.
