It’s excellent news that University College London is to host the new £250m Dementia Research Institute. The joint Medical Research Council/ Alzheimer’s Society / Alzheimer’s Research UK investment will bring together world-leading expertise in biomedical, care, public health and translational dementia research.
There has long been a need for innovative, discovery science to unlock our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the development and progression of dementia. We are pleased that our collective efforts to lobby the Government and engage with industry to push this forward have been recognised.
The Institute will drive new approaches to diagnosis, treatment, care provision and prevention of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and vascular dementia. Headed by Professor Bart de Strooper, in time the Institute will be led by up to 50 professors and a total research staff of about 400.
